Derelict Cave Exploration Ends in Chaos as Drunk Backpacker Gets Trapped
Emergency services launched a coordinated rescue operation after a member of a group of backpackers became trapped in a derelict cave late on Sunday. The incident occurred when the individual, reportedly intoxicated along with the rest of the group, attempted to squeeze through a partially blocked doorway inside the cave. The unstable structure collapsed behind him, leaving him trapped and requiring immediate assistance.
The Incident
The group of backpackers, described as heavily intoxicated, had been exploring the area when the mishap occurred. According to witnesses, the trapped individual ventured into the cave despite warnings from others about the unstable doorway. Moments later, the structure gave way, sealing him inside. Panicked, the group attempted to free their friend, inadvertently causing further damage to the cave’s entrance, before calling emergency services.
Rescue Efforts
Responding to the call, the Fire Rescue Unit (FRU) arrived on the scene alongside the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), who were equipped to handle the precarious situation. Due to the crowd's disruptive behaviour, the Territorial Support Group (TSG) and Emergency Response Team (ERT) were also deployed to maintain order and ensure the safety of the rescuers. FRU worked carefully to stabilize the collapsed doorway using specialized equipment, while HART monitored the trapped individual’s condition. After a delicate operation lasting approximately 20 minutes, the individual was successfully freed from the cave. He was assessed by paramedics on-site and found to have sustained only minor scrapes and mild dehydration.
Crowd Control Challenges
The rescue operation was complicated by the disruptive behaviour of the intoxicated group, some of whom were reportedly argumentative and uncooperative. TSG officers worked to de-escalate tensions and ensure the group did not interfere with rescue efforts. “Managing the group was an additional challenge,” said a spokesperson for the Territorial Support Group. “Our priority was ensuring the safety of everyone involved while allowing rescuers to do their job.” Outcome and Recommendations The incident ended without serious injuries, and the group was escorted away from the area following the rescue. Emergency services have since called for greater awareness of the dangers associated with exploring derelict structures, particularly under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities are also considering measures such as installing warning signs and reinforcing access barriers around hazardous sites to prevent similar incidents in the future.
While the incident concluded safely, officials have reminded the public to respect emergency personnel and prioritize safety during such events.
