Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Sparks Chemical Hazmat Response in London

On Saturday 3 January at approximately 19:30, emergency services were mobilised following several 999 calls reporting a serious road traffic collision involving a van and a small goods vehicle. Control dispatched units from London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service and officers from the Metropolitan Police.
Upon arrival, crews found both vehicles producing heavy smoke. A cordon was established to protect members of the public and secure the scene. Chemical materials were discovered inside the small LGV which prompted London Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team to attend, along with the Fire Rescue Unit from London Fire Brigade.
Both vehicles still had occupants trapped and a fire had taken hold. Emergency crews worked rapidly to prevent an explosion risk while simultaneously attempting to rescue those trapped inside. The fire was brought under control and extinguished by around 20:00.
Despite the efforts of attending crews, both occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene.
