Illegal Encampment in Church Car Park, Westminster
An illegal encampment has been discovered on the grounds of St. Mary’s Church in Westminster, sparking concern from church officials and local residents.
The encampment, consisting of several tents and caravans, was first noticed late last week. Church staff reported the issue to local authorities after parishioners raised safety and hygiene concerns.
“It’s a difficult situation,” said Rev. Peter Collins, vicar of St. Mary’s. “We want to be compassionate, but the grounds aren’t equipped to safely support people living there.”
Westminster City Council confirmed that action was being taken and that High Court Enforcement Bailiffs had attended the site to start the eviction.
Some residents have expressed frustration over what they call a growing trend of encampments in the area resulting in Public Disorder and violence against the local authority's and emergency services breaking out.
A Metropolitan Spokes person said "We responded to reports of a disturbance linked to the unauthorised encampment on church grounds in Westminster on Tuesday Night. Several individual were taken into custody for a public order offence. Officers continue to monitor the area and are working closely with partner agencies to ensure the situation is managed safely and lawfully."
There was reports of people needing hospital treatment, We have contacted the London Ambulance Service for more, and officials say efforts are ongoing to resolve the situation peacefully.
