Today, the duty inspector, alongside three duty sergeants from the Emergency Response Team (ERT), organised a special initiative to address local crime, taking a step back to a time when police patrolled on foot and bike. The focus was on using pedal power to increase visibility, improve community engagement, and tackle issues in areas that may be harder to reach by vehicle. The group of officers was assigned to patrol the Mirror Park area after an uptick in complaints from the public regarding cyclists riding on the pavements and individuals cycling without lights. As part of this initiative, the officers were instructed to be vigilant for those committing cycling offences, offering advice about road safety rules while also enforcing the law where necessary. Cyclists caught breaking the law could face fines of up to £50, depending on the offence.

During this patrol, the officers were able to spot a suspected bike theft in progress. Thanks to the mobility and flexibility of the e-bikes, the officers were able to quickly respond and pursue the suspect in an area where a police car would have struggled to follow. This swift action led to the successful apprehension of the thief, who was arrested by the bike patrol officers. The stolen bicycle was subsequently returned to its rightful owner, much to their relief. The use of bicycles in this operation proved effective in several ways: not only did it allow for faster access to certain areas, but it also provided the officers with an opportunity to engage directly with the community in a more approachable manner. This initiative highlights the police force’s continued commitment to adapt and innovate while staying connected to the public they serve. It’s hoped that this new approach will help tackle the rising concerns of cycling-related offences, promoting safer streets and a greater sense of security for Camden residents.
