Marine Policing Unit

The Marine Police Unit (MPU) is a specialist policing division dedicated to patrolling and protecting the waterways, lakes, and coastlines across the metropolitan area. Our officers are highly trained in both traditional policing and advanced marine operations, ensuring safety and security both on and off the water.

MPU officers are on the front line of tackling waterborne crime, conducting vessel stops, supporting underwater operations, providing a new angle on surveillance operations, and assisting other services with callouts. Working closely with other divisions and emergency services, the MPU operates in some of the most challenging and dynamic environments, safeguarding the public where land-based policing cannot reach.

The unit is overseen by a dedicated command structure of Inspectors and Sergeants, supported by a skilled training team. Our trainers provide professional development courses designed to expand your marine knowledge and prepare you for the demands of life on the water. From your first patrol to commanding a vessel, we’ll ensure you have the skills, guidance, and opportunities to progress within the MPU.

Training Opportunities

  • Underwater Search Team: This unit is commonly known as the dive unit. Here, you will learn the basics of diver training, as well as specialist training for evidence retrieval and search methods.
  • Coxswain Course (Marine Tactics): Learn to operate and command police vessels with precision, covering tactical maneuvers, pursuit procedures, and handling high-pressure situations including surveillance, vessel boarding, and coordination with land-based officers.

  • Ground Operations: Training in riverside and coastal policing, going into detail on the job of an MPU officer when they aren't getting their feet wet. This course explains the methods employed to catch crime in our ports and near our waterways.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the MPU, you must:

  • Have completed your PC probation.
  • Have at least 20 hours playtime.
  • Hold a clean TX record for the past 6 weeks (at command discretion).
  • Commit to at least 4 hours per month on MPU duties (subject to review as the division grows).

The MPU is more than a division – it’s a family of officers dedicated to protecting the waterways. If you’re ready to step off the pavement and onto the deck, the MPU is waiting for you.

⚓ We’ll see you in the wind.
